  • TRANSPORTATION:
    • Ferry Boat: we took a 2.5 hr ferry boat from Athens to Mykonos. Make sure and get to the Athens port early to get a seat quicker on the ship. The boat ride was overall tolerable and not very bumpy but you may get sea sickness if you are susceptible to it.
      • HIGHLY RECOMMEND to bring sea-sickness prevention medication Dramamine (non-drowsy) and take one hour before ferry ride

    • Rideshare Apps to Download : none
      • Taxi's are available but the minimum cost is $30.
      • Its much more efficient and cost effective hiring a driver for your time there.
    • Public Bus system - we did not take this, but it was an option
  • HOTEL: Areas to stay: Downtown
    • Most of the sites/touristy areas are in downtown which is right next to the ocean as well. It makes for some great sunrise and sunset views from your hotel balcony.

    • View from Absolute Mykonos Hotel
  • PAYMENT METHODS:
    • Cash: Useful to have some euros on hand but everywhere we went to took credit card (a lot of their economy is built on tourism so they tend to cater to tourists)
    • Credit Cards
      •  Only use credit cards with 0% foreign transaction fee
      • Always charge your credit card in Euros instead of USD (better conversion rate)
  • SAFETY: Emergency phone number is 112
      • We generally felt safe, however, always be around of your surroundings. Pick pocketers are prevalent and its important to protect yourself
    • Safe to walk during the day. Important to make sure and have transportation arranged for the evening
    • Don't keep cell phones and valuables out in the open or visible
  • WHAT TO PACK:
    • Sunscreen is a MUST. The breeze on the island is nice but it gets very hot.
    • Bring a hat and sunglasses is a MUST!
    • Print color copies of passport to carry in wallet
    • Plug converter/adapter is needed if coming from the USA
    • Bring some longer sleeve items as is it can get chilly at night (And also during the day with the breeze)
  • WEATHER/BEST TIME TO VISIT:
    • Shoulder season - March or September/October. The summers can get really hot so best to go during the spring or fall (outside of winter).
  • LANGUAGE: Everyone speaks English although knowing some basic Greek phrases will make you stand out :)
  • RANDOM TIPS:
    • Download Google maps for the island as signal can be difficult to get at times.
    • Download WhatsApp to communicate with tour guide/groups
    • If possible, avoid visiting any major tourist attraction on weekends/holidays due to heavy crowds. Morning & weekdays are much better to visit.
    • BOTTLED WATER ONLY - do not drink from the tap Including at your hotel. Bottled water only!! Hotels will often time give you bottled water as well.
  • VEGETARIAN/VEGAN FOOD:
    • Vegan Rhino was delicious - its a little on the pricier end but most places are going to be at a premium on the island. The gyros were delicious.
    • D'Angelos has some fantastic italian food. We loved the pizza there but the best part was definitely the Snickers' dessert
    • Souvlaki Story - Delicious falafel and veggie wraps!

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • 1) Get a hotel with an ocean view/balcony. Can't even begin to describe how serene and beautiful the area is and how relaxing it is sitting oceanside.
  • 2) Schedule a driving tour around Mykonos - its hard to find a walking tour because you'll be limited to just the downtown area. To get the most out of your time on the island, a tour is better done driving as you'll be able to see more of the island. If you book transportation through a company, they may be able to set up a tour for you as well
  • Church of Panagia Paraportiani

    3) Delos Island Tour - you'll take a boat ride to Delos Island (be sure to take Dramamine beforehand!) and the tour guides are great at showing the ancient city. It is very hot, though, and there is no shade so make sure and cover up/apply sunscreen liberally.
  • 4) Mykonos definitely has a "party-vibe." You'll find various beach clubs with dancing and bars. It's beautiful on the island for sunset. If not interested in partying, we would recommend choosing a different island.
