TRANSPORTATION: Similar to other countries in Europe, Denmark has a great public transport system involving the metro, buses and trains.

  • Train/Bus: Train/Bus/Metrorail is very easy to use and connects between cities.
    • Copenhagen card (more below): gets you full access to all forms of public transportation
  • Flight: flew into the Copenhagen Airport from Bergen and then flew back to the states from Copenhagen
    • The airport is 30 minutes from city center
    • Its very easy to catch a train from the airport which will take you right into city center.
  • Taxi/Rideshare: Taxi’s are readily available but uber is illegal. With how extensive the metro/train system is, though, its significantly cheaper and easier just using public transport.

HOTEL: We stayed close to the airport and thought that was a mistake. Although it was easy to get into town and where we needed to go via the metro/train, it would’ve been more fun and worth our stay in city center.

PAYMENT METHODS:

  • CASH: The Krone is the official currency of Denmark. The only place we went to that didn’t take credit card is in Freetown Christiania. Luckily, they took USD, but we would’ve gotten a better exchange rate if we had used Krones.
  • CREDIT CARDS: Credit Cards were accepted everywhere we went to. Make sure and get cards with No Foreign Transaction Fee and always charge credit card in the local currency, not USD.

SAFETY: We felt very safe in Copenhagen (As we did in all of Scandinavia). Make sure and take common safety precautions, but everyone we met was very friendly and nice.

  • Emergency Phone # is 112

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Print color copies of passport to carry in wallet
  • Plug Converter: Need to have a plug converter
  • Backpack needed due to lots of walking/public transportation - any of the museums you go to, will need to check in backpack into lockers
LANGUAGE: Everyone speaks English so no issues there, but their national language is Danish.

RANDOM TIPS:

  • Download Google maps offline for any city you will be visiting
  • Download WhatsApp to communicate with tour guide/groups
  • This is a very walkable city and overall easy to navigate.
  • Visit during the summer as the weather can be too cold otherwise; we went in August and thought the weather was great (in the low 70s F).
  • Avoid going on any holidays!
  • When visiting musuems, you will need to check in your backpack into free lockers

VEGETARIAN/VEGAN FOOD:

  • Out of the Scandinavian Cities we went to, we had the hardest time in Copenhagen finding vegetarian/vegan food. There are certainly options but most of the options are burgers which gets old after a while. Our favorite place was this location called Vital Foods which was delicious (So great we went multiple times).
  • Smörrebröd is a Danish Delicacy that is worth trying - an open-faced sandwich that has many vegan/vegetarian options. We got ours at Lillian’s and enjoyed it.
  • Reffen Food Court and Torvehallerne Food Hall are great places to check out as they have many different restaurants/food stalls that you can grab lunch or dinner at
  • Water was ok to drink from the tap.

COPENHAGEN RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • 1) Buy the Copenhagen Card - this is the biggest recommendation for when visiting Copenhagen. You can download the app ahead of time and buy the card early, but make sure and not to activate it until you are ready to use it as it is time sensitive. It gives you access to public transport, museums, tourist attractions, etc. and is a big money saver if you make use of it and see a lot of the sites. All of the sites below were covered by the Copenhagen card.
  • 3) Freetown Christiania - its hard to explain in words how cool this place is, but its basically a community that lives as its own municipality and governs via its own laws in the middle of Copenhagen. It’s free to visit and very cool to check out - be wary of people trying to sell you drugs. They primarily accept cash so make sure and have either Krone/USD on you. We went to a vegan restaurant there that was amazing (only accepted cash).
  • .4) Kronborg Slot (Hamlet’s Castle) - the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Its a 45 minute train ride outside of the city but is a cool castle to check out. English tours run intermittently at the castle and are included in the cost.

Kronborg Castle - the castle that Shakespeare Hamlet is based on
  • 5) Church of our Savior - a church that you can walk to the top of and see stunning views of the city of Copenhagen.
View from Our Church of our Savior steeple

  • 6) Tivoli Gardens - A massive amusement park/carnival in the center of Copenhagen. They have concerts intermittently that are included in the cost of the ticket.

  • 7) Rosenberg Castle - has a very nice garden (King’s Garden) that you can relax in and then see Royal jewelry inside
